The First Fire
In 1924, on a Sunday afternoon, Karl Georg Kirk Christiansen and Godtfred Kirk Christiansen were playing in the woodshop while Ole and Kirstine were in the house, and set fire to some shavings of wood with a glue smelter. Both shop and house were burned down. So, Ole had an architect draw out some plans, and he built a larger, newer building. Since it was so large, Ole and his family could not afford it. So, Ole moved the family to a single apartment near the shop and rented out all the other rooms to earn some money. That very house is now part of the LEGO Group, and one of a few of Ole’s buildings that still exist. It is known for its large dormer and two lions flanking the front door.
